Dental Implants

Are missing teeth causing you to hide your smile? Are daily tasks like chewing and speaking painful or difficult? Dental implants are the preferred solution to missing teeth that can restore your smile's look, function, and health. Dr. Michael McCartney can perform every step of your dental implant procedure at his Adel, GA, practice.

What Are Dental Implants And How Do They Work?

Dental implants are small titanium posts surgically placed into your jaw to act as a sturdy base for life-like restorations like crowns, bridges, and dentures. Because dental implants integrate with your jawbone to provide stimulation in the same way as tooth roots, they are as close as you can get to having each healthy, natural tooth back.

Are Dental Implants Worth the Cost?

Most dental professionals agree that implants are the best solution to missing teeth. While implants cost more than traditional restorations, their long-term benefits to your oral health make them worth the price tag. Our Adel office also offers CareCredit® financing that breaks your cost into low-interest monthly payments, allowing you to receive treatment without exceeding your budget.

How Delayed Treatment Can Lead
To More Expensive Procedures

When left untreated, missing and severely damaged teeth can lead to significant oral health issues and more time in the dental chair. Risks include:

Gum Disease

Missing teeth make patients more susceptible to gum disease and infection. This can spread to surrounding teeth leading to additional tooth loss that can require more dental work.

Jawbone Atrophy

Missing teeth can lead to jawbone atrophy, oral health issues, and a change in appearance. Without dental implants stimulating bone retention, you could suffer from health and cosmetic issues that can lead to a need for expensive treatments.

Infection & Decay

A severely damaged tooth can be extracted and replaced with an implant. When left untreated, a damaged tooth can lead to infection, decay, tooth loss, and damage to surrounding teeth.

Physical Health

Oral health concerns like gum disease and infections can affect your overall health, increasing your risk of heart disease and hypertension. Maintaining good oral health could help prevent time spent in your dentist's and medical doctor's offices.

What Are My Dental Implant Options? Solutions To Meet Every Need

Dr. McCartney will recommend the best option for you based on your oral health and degree of tooth loss. In addition to traditional dental implants, Dr. McCartney also offers:

All-on-4
Dental Implants

The All-on-4® method is an advanced form of dental implant placement that can support a full-arch denture with four implants instead of the typical six. The strategic placement of these four implants allows patients with low jawbone density to receive treatment without a preliminary bone graft. The All-on-4 method can securely hold your dentures in place while they function like your natural teeth.

Implant-Supported
Bridges

A dental bridge can replace multiple consecutive teeth. Traditional dental bridges are attached to your two natural teeth on either side of the gap. However, this method requires alterations to your natural, healthy teeth. Dr. McCartney can secure your dental bridge with implants instead. This method prevents jaw atrophy and requires no alterations to healthy natural teeth.

Implant
Conversion

Patients who currently wear traditional dentures can still benefit from dental implants. Dr. McCartney can surgically place your dental implants and modify your existing dentures to attach to them. This helps save patients the cost of a brand-new restoration while giving access to the benefits of dental implants. Never again will you worry about your dentures sliding out of place.

What Can I Expect During Implant Treatment?

The process of receiving traditional implants requires at least two surgeries with three to six months of healing time in between. In general, here is what you can expect from start to finish:
Dental implants allow patients to eat whatever they want and chew with comfort with restorations that look, feel, and function like natural teeth.
Dental implants allow patients to eat whatever they want and chew with comfort with restorations that look, feel, and function like natural teeth.

Consultation

You will first meet with our dentist so he can assess your oral health and your cosmetic goals. He will determine if any preparatory procedures like tooth extraction, gum disease treatment, or fillings should be completed first.

Implant Placement

Our dentist will create a treatment plan, including precise surgical guides for implant placement. A local anesthetic will be used on the surgical site. We also offer sedation dentistry options upon request to maximize your comfort. He will insert your titanium implants into your jawbone, then suture the incision closed. (If you are receiving All-on-4 treatment, we will attach your denture at this time.)

Osseointegration

In the three to six months following surgery, your implants will fuse to your jawbone through a process called osseointegration. (If you receive All-on-4 treatment, you will receive a permanent denture once our dentist confirms that osseointegration is complete).

Abutment Placement

Once your implants have fully healed, our dentist will create an incision in the gums to access them and attach the custom-made abutments (this step is not involved in All-on-4). Abutments are what connect your restorations to your implants. It will take about two weeks for your gums to heal around the implants, leaving them exposed above the gumline. Once the gums have healed, our dentist will take an impression to create your dental crowns, bridges, or dentures.

Final Appointment

When your restoration is ready, you will return to our Adel practice, where our dentist will secure your restorations. You will have a beautiful, functioning smile when you leave this appointment.
